Admissions
B.A. in Music
Students in any of the liberal arts colleges of Rutgers can elect music as a major or minor subject. Both courses of study are primarily academic, with the emphasis placed on music theory and music history rather than performance.
Major Requirements: B.A. Program
Prior to declaring the major in music, students must first complete both 07:700:122 and 124 with a grade of C+ or better. Written permission to enter the program also must be obtained from the Department of Music.
Music majors in the bachelor of the arts program are required to complete at least 41 credits, distributed as follows:
- 13 credits of music theory: 07:700:121, 122, 127, 221, 222\
- 8 credits of musicianship: 07:700:123-124, 223-224
- 12 credits of music history: 07:700:301-302, either 303 or 304, and either 419 or 420
- 4 terms of performance study (4 credits)
- 4 terms of large ensemble (4 credits)
All students must pass a piano proficiency examination no later than the spring term of the junior year. In order to graduate with a major in music, students must achieve a minimum grade-point-average of 2.5 in courses required for the major.
A few basic principles govern the way in which the performance requirements are satisfied. Because B.A. majors must pass the Keyboard Proficiency Examination in order to complete the major, it is customary for the four required semesters of performance lessons to begin with piano. The four semesters of Piano Class I and II (701:159-160 and 259-260) are intended to bring students to the required level in piano. If a student is already beyond that level, he or she may satisfy the four-semester requirement with lessons in piano, voice, or another instrument. These private lessons are open to B.A. majors only if the teachers have studio space available and students already perform at an acceptable level (lessons for beginners in an instrument are not available). Credit for private lessons is "by arrangement" and depends on the length of the lesson (1, 2, or 3 credits). Note that the requirement for the B.A. major is four semesters, not four credits.
Minor Requirements: B.A. Program
Students may elect a minor program in music consisting of at least 18 credits, distributed as follows: (1) at least 6 credits in music theory (example: 07:700:103, 104); (2) at least 6 credits in music history (example: 07:700:101, 102); and (3) 6 elective credits in music, to be chosen in consultation with a faculty adviser.
Departmental Honors Program
The Department of Music offers an honors program to qualified students majoring in music. Before the end of the junior year, interested students who meet departmental requirements for honors candidacy should apply in writing to the Director for Undergraduate Studies for admission to the honors program. To complete the program successfully, the candidate must submit an honors paper prepared under the supervision of a member of the faculty (07:700:495 or 496 Senior Honors Tutorial) and maintain a cumulative grade-point-average in the major of 3.5 or better.
Courses for Non-majors
The department offers a variety of courses for the non-major. In general, 07:700:101 and/or103 provide the pre-requisites for most other non-major courses in music. Some ensembles and other performance courses also are open to non-majors.
