Opera at Rutgers

Puccini: Suor Angelica

Donizetti: Il Campanello

Featuring a double bill of Italian opera with English supertitles, these one-act operas by Puccini and Donizetti provide a contrast between the tragic and the comedic.  Suor Angelica is the story of Sister Angelica who became a nun after her wealthy family sent her away as a punishment while Il Campanello is the tale of a young couple on their wedding night whose pleasures are absurdly interrupted by her former lover.

Supertitles are visible from the mezzanine only.

The Merry Wives of Windsor

By William Shakespeare

Queen Elizabeth herself requested the return of Falstaff to Shakespeare’s stage.  Who was Shakespeare to say no?  In this riotous comedy, the urge to be unfaithful haunts husbands, amuses wives, sends Falstaff into hiding in a laundry room—and the river—and even turns children into forest elves.  A sly and silly crowd-pleaser from the Bard.

Sea Marks

By Gardner McKay

Colm Primrose, a man who's only known the sea, and Timothea, a woman very much of the land, meet by chance and fall in love.  Simple enough--but where will they live?  Gardner McKay's Sea Marks pits the desire for love against the desire for home in terms both stark and beautiful.
