Mike Richmond

Mike Richmond, bassist and composer, was born in Philadelphia, PA. He studied at Temple University with Edward Arian (Philadelphia Orchestra) and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical performance/music education. After graduation he studied jazz technique and harmony with Jimmy Garrison (bassist with John Coltrane).

Mike has been a clinician and guest conductor with the National German Youth Jazz Orchestra since 1990. He represented the United States as a guest lecturer at the International Symposium On Jazz Pedagogy in 1986 (sponsored by the French Cultural Ministry). His book Modern Walking Bass Technique is internationally used as one the leading texts on the art of jazz bass technique. As a faculty member of New York University he was honored with the Teacher Of The Year Award (1994) and the Esteemed Faculty Award (1991). He has also won Grammy Awards with Miles Davis and the Philadelphia Orchestra and has been featured on over 150 recordings (twelve solo).

He has been a featured soloist with the Bratislava Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cologne Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cologne Radio Big Band, and the Hamburg State Opera.
