Alan Abel

Percussion

Former Associate Principal Percussionist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Alan Abel retired in September 1997 after 38 years of service. He currently works with graduate students at Temple University and gives master classes at Rutgers University. Abel has compiled two books on orchestral studies for timpani and percussion for G. Schirmer, Inc. and has designed and produced symphonic triangles and bass drum stands that are used throughout the world. Abel has served on the PAS Board of Directors, was inducted into the PAS Hall of Fame in 1998, and is presently Chair of the PAS Symphonic Committee. He has been a faculty member of the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City University, Glassboro State College, and the Philadelphia Settlement Music School. Abel was a part-time member of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and, after two years in a U.S. Air Force Band, played in the Oklahoma City Symphony (1953–59). He has given clinics and master classes throughout the U.S., Australia, Germany, and Japan, and is still active in this medium.

Chris Deviney

Percussion

Chris Deviney is Principal Percussionist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and has been Section Percussionist in the Houston Symphony. He has also previously performed and recorded with the New Orleans Symphony, Toronto Symphony, New York Philharmonic, and Philadelphia Orchestra. He has performed at the Bard Music Festival and as a featured soloist with the Brevard (FL) Symphony. Mr. Deviney was a student at the Aspen Music Festival where he was the recipient of the first Charles Owen Memorial Fellowship. He was also a two-year Tanglewood Institute Fellowship recipient. Mr. Deviney received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Florida State University under Prof. Gary Werdesheim and his Master of Music degree from Temple University under the legendary Alan Abel. Mr. Deviney has been featured in a number of chamber settings and recitals including Tulane University, Temple University, Network for New Music, Atmos Percussion Ensemble, and the Philadelphia Orchestra Chamber Series. In 2002, Mr. Deviney was a featured Clinic Presenter at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention and has presented clinics for PAS Day of Percussion events in Louisiana, Florida and Pennsylvania. He has given masterclasses at Temple University and the Curtis Institute on the study of preparation for successful audition-taking. He has given professional coaching at the New World Symphony. In 2005, he received the Florida State University Dohnanyi Award for Excellence in Music Performance. Mr. Deviney is a proud endorser of Sabian cymbals, Pearl/Adams concert percussion, and Innovative Percussion mallets. He resides in Elkins Park, PA with his wife and daughter.

Victor Lewis

Jazz Drums

As a child, Victor Lewis studied cello, piano and finally drums, doing his first home town gigs in Omaha, Nebraska at age 15. The youngster was encouraged by such as Buster Williams and Billy Hart to make the move to New York where in 1974 he began a quick ascension to prominence. Victor was the first-call drummer for masters like Joe Farrell, Dexter Gordon, and Hubert Laws and started long-time associations with Woody Shaw, Carla Bley, David Sanborn, Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, and Stan Getz. One of the leading drummers of our time, Victor also has a second reputation as a dedicated composer and smart bandleader.

She-e Wu

Percussion

She-e Wu is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of Performance and Jazz Faculties at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey where she directs the Rutgers Percussion Ensemble (winner of the 2004 Percussive Arts Society International Percussion Ensemble Competition) and coordinates the Percussion Program (Faculty includes Alan Abel and Chris Deviney). Ms. Wu has appeared as a solo artist at the 25th, 27th and 30th Percussive Arts Society International Convention; Journées de la Percussion, NancyPhony Festival, perKumania festival, and PercuPassion Festival in France; Bach Symposium/Bach Variation Festival in Lincoln Center; Taiwan Connection concert at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center; International Percussion Festival and Interamerican Music and Arts Festival Orchestra in Puerto Rico; Festival Internacional de Percusion "Ritmo Vital 2001" and National Percussion Convention in Spain; Fukui Marimba Seminar in Japan; Giornate della Percussione in Italy; Taipei International Percussion Convention, and many other festivals. Ms. Wu has performed as guest recitalist and clinician at universities, colleges, conservatories in France, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, England, Germany as well American music institutions like Curtis Institute of Music, New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, and at "Days of Percussion" throughout the United States. Her recording of Eric Ewazen’s marimba concerto with the International Sejong Soloists was released on Resonator Records in 2003. Her solo marimba CD Snapshot and her recording with Flautist Bart Feller have both been released in 2006. Ms. Wu is a clinician and a recitalist for the Innovative Percussion, Dynasty and Zildjian companies. Her new line of signature mallets with Innovative Percussion will be available in spring 2007.
