Music

All of Mason Gross School of the Arts Music degree programs have as their common aim: the development of well-educated professional musicians who have a deep historical and theoretical understanding of all aspects of music. The diversity of faculty specializations within the school provides a breadth of expertise rarely encountered in other programs.

The Music Department offers undergraduate training in three areas:

  • Classical Performance
  • Jazz
  • Music Education
Students in Performance and Jazz are trained for professional careers as performers or performer/educators. Students in Music Education graduate with certification to teach music in New Jersey public schools. All three areas provide rigorous instruction in Music Theory and History, as well as Performance, and all three are complemented by core requirements in the liberal arts.

The department also offers graduate study leading to master's and doctoral degrees in Performance, Music Education, Musicology, and Theory/Composition, as well as the Artist Diploma in Performance.

Mission

The Music Department of Rutgers University offers the full range of degree programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. As a constituent part of two larger institutional entities, the Music Department's mission, goals, and objectives are closely aligned with those of the Mason Gross School of the Arts, on the one hand, and with those of Rutgers University, on the other. Chartered in 1976, Mason Gross has emerged as the leading arts conservatory of New Jersey. Sharing the school's aspirations, the Music Department strives for the highest artistic standards, while fully supporting the university's pursuit of excellence in academic training and research. The department is therefore proud to attract a diverse population of students seeking specialized training or a comprehensive and well-rounded education that addresses a wide range of artistic as well as theoretical concerns. A distinguished body of faculty prepares students for professional careers in music, providing them with the skills and knowledge to succeed as performers, teachers, composers, and scholars in a very competitive market. Additionally, the department offers instruction for non-majors, as well as serving a constituency wider than the university audience by means of performances and lectures on and off campus, leadership in music education, and advocacy for music throughout the state.

Want to participate in a music ensemble as a non-major?

All music ensembles sponsored by Mason Gross School of the Arts can be joined by audition by non-majors.
