Theater Arts Master of Fine Arts Design

The Program

Mason Gross School of the Arts offers Master of Fine Arts programs in set design, costume design, lighting design, and costume technology.

The professional conservatory training program allows first-year students to develop classical skills and technique in drawing, composition and theater technology.  In the second and third years, students explore the theory and practice of design and technology, with the assumption that good craft and good art are not mutually exclusive.

All department subscription and studio shows are designed, stage-managed and built by students in the program.  Student artists and student designers can expect to have four to five produced shows in their portfolios upon graduation.  Professional internships in New York City and elsewhere are also available for third-year thesis projects.

Scene design and costume shops are well-equipped and fully staffed, containing the necessary materials to construct scenery, props and costumes, as well as to maintain lighting and sound equipment.  Graduate students share design studios located in the same building as classrooms, costume shops and properties shops.

In addition to helping each student realize his or her individual artistic potential, the faculty and staff are working professionals who present an honest, practical view of the industry.  The student-to-teacher ratio is small, allowing for personalized attention and consistent mentoring.  A three-year, full-time residency is required.

Students who have made sufficient progress and who have been recommended by the faculty can be presented at the Design Showcase, which is held in New York City.
