Theater Arts Master of Fine Arts Playwriting The Program Playwriting and new play production are integrally connected in this program, which is designed to ground the student thoroughly in the craft of theater writing. This is a full-time, three-year residency-required program which includes regular small-group and individual instruction in playwriting, screenwriting, and dramatic adaptation. It is augmented by script-in-hand readings, workshops and full productions. A maximum of two students will be admitted to the program annually. The program emphasizes the craft of theater writing and the collaborative process of bringing a script to the stage. Students will have a script produced before a public audience in each of the first and second years. In general, third-year students will have scripts premiered in the Rutgers Theater Company’s Emerging Artist Series. Additionally, the program requires at least one literary management internship at a professional theater.
