Theater Arts Stage Management at The Globe
Conservatory Stage Management Training
Rutgers University is committed to providing intensive, sequential conservatory training that will help young focused theater students grow into dedicated and versatile professional theater artists. For undergraduate stage management students, a portion of that training comes from spending the fall semester of their junior year in residence at Shakespeare’s Globe.
Stage Management as a specialty involves every theatrical discipline and requires knowledge and background in every facet of theatrical endeavor. Breadth of understanding and experience is essential to enable the stage manager to facilitate the work of theatrical artists and professionals and ultimately maintain the artistic integrity of the production on behalf of the producer and as it was established by the director and designers in rehearsal.
Rutgers Conservatory at Shakespeare’s Globe consists of 12 credits of conservatory training in stage management, Shakespeare’s Plays in Context and British Art and Culture, totaling 6 credits. The students are in class for a total of 30-45 hours per week plus preparation.
Young artists at Rutgers Conservatory at Shakespeare’s Globe also have the unique opportunity to fully immerse themselves in British life and history. Through field trips to museums, backstage tours at some of England’s most prestigious theaters and viewing a wide variety of theatrical productions, students are able to extend their classroom beyond the walls of the Globe. Only in London would these students have the opportunity to witness this art in action.
